Giessen's African Partnership Conference Boosts Urban Cooperation
Giessen recently hosted the 6th Partnership Conference between German and Sub-Saharan African municipalities, drawing around 200 guests from 18 African nations and Germany. The event, held from September 8 to 11, 2025, focused on fostering international cooperation and sustainable urban development.
Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher kicked off the conference, stressing the significance of municipal partnerships in creating a more social, just, and sustainable world. The event's catchphrase, 'Knowledge is the only resource that grows when shared', encapsulated its spirit.
The conference explored themes such as sustainable urban development, fair trade, digital mobility, urban planning, and refugee integration. It highlighted the successful city partnership between Giessen and Swakopmund (Namibia) as a model for international cooperation. Students from Giessen and Radisele (Botswana) also participated, gaining insights into international collaboration.
Despite challenges like varying framework conditions, bureaucratic hurdles, and limited resources, the conference demonstrated that creative solutions can be found through dialogue and mutual learning. It provided momentum for future international cooperation and will continue to shape work in Giessen.
