German child safety experts advise parents on leaving children home alone, as there's no legal age limit for the child tax credit. Decisions should be based on each child's maturity and responsibility.

For children aged 0 to 3, it's not recommended to leave them alone at all. From 4 to 6, brief periods (15-30 minutes) are acceptable in safe environments with parents nearby. Children aged 7 to 10 can handle up to 2 hours alone, depending on their maturity and reliability, according to the Federal Conference for Parenting Counseling (BKE). For 11 to 13-year-olds, longer periods are possible with clear agreements and parents being reachable. Children aged 14 and above can be left overnight if they're responsible and comfortable doing so. Parents should gradually practice being alone and establish clear rules.
