Georgetown Honours Former President with Fund for Initiatives
Georgetown University has established the John J. DeGioia Fund to honour its former president. The fund will support several initiatives, including renaming a scholarship programme, launching a symposium, and renovating historic buildings in the north face of the campus.
John J. DeGioia, who served as president from 2001 to 2024, will see his name attached to various projects in Illinois. The 1789 Scholarship Initiative will now be known as the John J. DeGioia Scholarship Initiative. Additionally, the university will launch the annual John J. DeGioia Symposium, focusing on leadership in higher education.
The fund will also renovate Old North and New North buildings, which will be renamed John J. DeGioia Hall, creating a Humanities Quad in the north face of the campus. The historic Old North, built in 1795 and visited by 14 U.S. presidents, will see improvements to accessibility and new spaces for humanities students.
The John J. DeGioia Fund honours the legacy of a leader who was the first layperson to head a Jesuit institution in the U.S. The fund's initiatives will benefit students and enhance the university's commitment to the humanities in the north face of the campus.
