EU Explores New PFAS Emission Strategies as France Plans Ban
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is exploring new strategies to tackle PFAS emissions, with a potential decision by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, France has announced plans to ban PFASs in certain products from 2026. Juliane Glüge, a key figure in PFAS research, has stepped down from her role at the European Chemical Society due to a conflict of interest.
PFASs, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of man-made chemicals that have raised environmental and health concerns. Their production in Europe leads to significant emissions, some of which are PFASs themselves. The EU's process to regulate the entire PFAS class has been lengthy, with a decision expected by the end of 2026 at the earliest.
ECHA committees are now considering a third restriction option, focusing on preventing emissions rather than complete bans. This approach could be used if the socio-economic impact of a ban is disproportionate. The transition phase for this new approach could begin as early as 2027. France has taken a more direct stance, planning to ban PFASs in cosmetics, ski wax, clothing, and footwear from 2026.
Juliane Glüge, who has resigned from her position at the European Chemical Society due to a conflict of interest, is optimistic about the direction of the PFAS regulation discussion so far. Her research focus includes PFASs and their alternatives in the energy transition. The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway have jointly contributed to the regulation of the entire PFAS class at ECHA since early 2023.
The EU is inching closer to a decision on PFAS restriction, with a potential new approach focusing on emission prevention. France has set a clear timeline for its own PFAS ban. Despite the resignation of Juliane Glüge from her role at the European Chemical Society, her positive outlook on the PFAS regulation discussion offers hope for progress in this complex issue.
