Welcome aboard, newbies! Local government courts in Hamburg are turning to an unexpected pool of talent to fill vacant positions - newcomers. Over the past 1.5 years, a staggering 80 new hires have been roped in to tackle the personnel crunch.

Justice Senator Anna Gallina (Greens) confirmed the trend, remarking, "Our Hamburg justice system has welcomed newcomers with open arms." Evidently, the demand for young talent in traditional training avenues is falling short.

The courts' busy commercial offices are looking to fill 50 unoccupied positions, but it's not all doom and gloom. With new arrivals, the offices have boosted their strength by an additional 30 workers. Presently, the office staff totals around 620 employees, consisting of numerous part-timers.

According to the authority, new colleagues are wanted for the remaining 50 positions. Senator Gallina believes that these new faces could alleviate the workload, especially in offices that offer multiple citizen-oriented services. The recruitment drive initiated in the closing months of 2023 has already shown promising results, she added.

Improving the workforce includes not just hiring newcomers, but also making the profession more appealing via attractive pay packages and enhanced career opportunities, as Gallina points out.

Skilling Up Newcomers in the Justice Sector

Before joining the local courts, newcomers must possess experience in administrative or office-related commercial fields. Then, they are tasked with on-the-job training within the court and prosecutor offices.

The new blood not only helps alleviate the load on heavily burdened business offices but also contributes valuable insights from their previous professional experiences, according to Vice President Lutz Wegerich of the Hamburg Local Court. Of course, recruiting and onboarding new staff is no small feat, given the tense personnel situation and impending retirements.

The justice authority has recently inaugurated a program aimed at quickly equipping newcomers across all courts and public prosecutors' offices.
