Enhanced Security Measures Confirmed at Dortmund University

University of Applied Sciences Dortmund Joins "Safe in Service" Network for Enhanced Safety Measures

The University of Applied Sciences Dortmund has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety and security of its members by joining the "Safe in Service" network. This network, an initiative of the NRW Ministry of the Interior, serves as a central platform for prevention and exchange.

The University, recognising the importance of fostering a respectful coexistence and secure university locations for successful teaching, learning, and working, sees its membership in the network as a means to broaden its efforts for a safe and respectful learning and working environment.

The "Safe in Service" network is a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing safety and preventing violence in educational and public service settings. It brings together various stakeholders such as school staff, security experts, local authorities, and social services.

One of the unique features of the network is its interdisciplinary collaboration, which allows for the creation of comprehensive safety strategies. It offers specialized training and resources, promoting a culture of safety, and facilitating open communication about risks and prevention among students, staff, and families to foster safer school and university environments.

Another key aspect is the early intervention mechanisms, which aim to identify potential risks or behavioural issues before they escalate. The network also provides access to support networks, including counseling, conflict resolution, and emergency response teams, to handle incidents holistically.

By joining the network, the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund can access concrete examples, guidelines, and ideas from other institutions, thereby complementing its internal efforts to ensure a safe environment. The University already has many people actively involved in the topic of safety and prevention.

The University values the exchange with over 850 authorities and institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia through the network. Nadine Fasching, a representative from the University, emphasised that the focus of the network is on employees, but students are also included.

The University believes that being part of the network sends an important message about its commitment to safety and violence prevention. For more information about the University's safety and prevention efforts, visit www.sicherimdienst.de.

At the certificate presentation on July 28, 2025, representatives from the Equal Opportunities Office, Staff Council, Severely Disabled Representative, Occupational Safety, IT Security, Facility Management, and Threat Management team were present to represent the University's dedication to this cause.

Copying of best practices is explicitly encouraged within the network, making it a valuable resource for continuous improvement in safety measures. The main purpose of the network is to better protect employees in the public service from threats, insults, and assaults. The University of Applied Sciences Dortmund is committed to this mission and looks forward to contributing to and learning from the network in the future.
