DSO & Canberra Cyber Hub Launch Cybersecurity Work-Integrated Learning Pilot
The Digital Skills Organisation (DSO) and the Canberra Cyber Hub have joined forces to launch an innovative cyber security work-integrated learning pilot. This initiative aims to bridge the growing skills gap in Australia's cybersecurity sector, which is currently ranked fifth globally but faces a significant shortfall in skilled workers.
The pilot, set to commence in late 2023 or early 2024, will strategically match interns with cyber employers. Participants will 'earn while they learn', gaining practical experience while meeting employers' workforce needs. Each intern will complete four microcredentials, which can be stacked for future learning. The programme begins with a four-week Power Skills Bootcamp, culminating in Comptia Security+ certification. Throughout the pilot, interns will also attend weekly training sessions to build their skills as cyber analysts. The initiative is led jointly by the DSO, Canberra Cyber Hub, and a range of Registered Training Providers (RTOs). Patrick Kidd, CEO of the DSO, believes industry-led training is crucial for the future and is long overdue. The pilot was developed in collaboration with employers, placing aptitude-assessed interns in training while they gain workplace skills. Australia predicts a need for 16,600 additional cyber security workers by 2026, highlighting the urgent need for this initiative.
The Cyber Security Work-Integrated Learning Pilot, led by the DSO and Canberra Cyber Hub, is set to address Australia's cyber skills gap. By providing hands-on training and workplace experience, the programme aims to equip interns with the skills needed to fill the 16,600 predicted job vacancies by 2026. This collaborative effort between industry, employers, and training providers is a significant step towards securing Australia's position as a leading cyber nation.
