Departement of Education (DepEd) in Davao: Fresh Science-Health-Engineering curriculum remains in experimental phase

Eager students in the Davao Region are awaiting the results of the experimental phase for the revamped Senior High School (SHS) curriculum. The Department of Education (DepEd) is busy fine-tuning the new curriculum, with Davao Region playing a key role in its development. Here's a lowdown on the current state of the revised curriculum and what lies ahead.

Trial and Error: Jenielito "Dodong" Atillo, DepEd-Davao spokesperson, confirms that the revised SHS curriculum is still in its trial phase. The implementation of this revamped curriculum might change or remain the same in the coming school years, depending on the outcome of the pilot. Positive or negative, the results will guide the decision-making process.

Two Tracks, Multiple Paths: Atillo also revealed that the previous four SHS tracks will be condensed into just two: Academic and Technical-Professional. The remaining tracks will be reclassified as electives, streamlining the SHS program.

Select Participating Schools: The pilot schools, both public and private, are yet to be disclosed. However, the number of schools differs based on the division's size. For smaller divisions, one public and one private school will participate, while larger divisions will each have three public and two private schools involved in the pilot. Davao City, a large division, will have five participating schools – three public and two private.

Monitoring Progress: DepEd closely monitors the pilot implementation to identify any areas that need improvement. Feedback from the participating schools will be crucial in evaluating the effectiveness and practicality of the revised curriculum.

Online Consultation: To gather public opinion and suggestions, DepEd conducted an online consultation on the proposed SHS curriculum from April 4 to 11, 2025. The gathered feedback will be considered during the finalization of the curriculum, aiming to ensure the new curriculum caters to various learners' needs.

Anticipated Launch: Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced that the updated SHS curriculum is set for phased implementation starting in the academic year 2025-2026. Classes for the 2025-2026 school year are set to begin on June 6 and end on March 31, 2026, with DepEd-Davao expecting an increase in enrollment due to the region's growing population.

Making a Mark: The revised SHS curriculum is part of a nationwide initiative to improve the quality of education by refining the existing SHS program, with a focus on enhancing learners' foundational competencies in communication, scientific and mathematical thinking, and personal development.
