Costco to Offer Discounted Ozempic and Wegovy at Over 600 Pharmacies Nationwide

Costco pharmacies nationwide will offer discounted prescriptions for Ozempic and Wegovy, GLP-1 drugs used for obesity treatment and diabetes management, starting this Friday. This move aims to make these medications more accessible to a wider range of consumers.

The drugs, produced by Novo Nordisk, will be available at over 600 Costco pharmacies across the country. Costco members with a prescription will pay a flat rate of $499 for a one-month supply, regardless of their insurance status. This price is in line with the manufacturer's suggested retail price and is also offered at other retailers like CVS and Walmart.

While this move increases accessibility, it's important to note that uninsured or underinsured individuals may still struggle to afford these medications. Furthermore, the out-of-pocket cost of $499 per month may be a barrier for some, despite being a discounted price. In comparison, telemedicine providers like LifeMD and Wisp offer these drugs directly to consumers at monthly prices ranging from $499 to $598, with no insurance requirements.

Ozempic and Wegovy have been shown to reduce stroke risk, treat liver disease, and protect heart health, in addition to their primary use in managing type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management.

The availability of Ozempic and Wegovy at Costco pharmacies is expected to provide some relief to patients who struggle with the high cost of these medications. However, the affordability gap remains a significant issue for many uninsured or underinsured individuals. As the use of GLP-1 drugs for obesity treatment continues to grow, with around 1 in 8 adults having used them, the need for more accessible and affordable options is clear.
