In a bid to address parental concerns, the state parents' council in Saxony-Anhalt is advocating for potential changes to the summer holiday system, aiming to better align it with Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Parents in Saxony-Anhalt have been voicing their dissatisfaction with the current holiday schedule, which they find less favourable compared to the southern states. The issue stems from the shorter duration and later timing of the holidays in Saxony-Anhalt, causing potential conflicts with popular vacation periods and extended family plans common in other states.

The key points of criticism include:

  • Shorter summer holidays compared to states like Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
  • The timing of their holidays might clash with peak vacation periods.
  • Potential logistical challenges for parents who work in different regions or want to coordinate holidays with those living in states with different vacation schedules.

In response to these concerns, there are considerations to potentially extend or better align the summer holiday period in Saxony-Anhalt to be more in line with Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. However, any changes would require coordination with the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz), which regulates school holiday schedules across German states.

Currently, the official dates for Saxony-Anhalt summer holidays in 2025 are from June 28 to August 8, which is generally shorter and later than Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The Saxony-Anhalt parents' council, however, has not expressed a need to change the current length of the summer holidays.

The chairperson of the state parents' council in Saxony-Anhalt, Matthias Rose, suggests maintaining the staggered shift of summer holidays to allow families to go on vacation at lower costs during the off-peak season. He also proposes considering the number of teaching days per school year instead of focusing on the number of holiday days.

The Ministry of Education in Magdeburg, meanwhile, has decided to wait for the consultations at the Education Ministers' Conference in the fall before commenting further on the issue.

It's important to note that childcare in Saxony-Anhalt during holiday periods is well-regulated.
