Commemorating Iqbal Chagla: Roshan Chagla contributes ₹2 crore to IDIA Law for an endowment fund establishment
The Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholarship Endowment, a significant philanthropic initiative, has been established with a generous donation of ₹2 crore by Roshan Chagla, wife of the late Senior Advocate Iqbal Chagla. This fund, managed by the IDIA Charitable Trust, is dedicated to supporting underprivileged law students by providing yearly scholarships to enhance their access to legal education.
Roshan Chagla spoke on the occasion, stating that Iqbal Chagla believed deeply in the power of law to create a fairer society. In his memory, these scholars will be known as Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholars.
The annual returns from the Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholarship Endowment will support the education of at least two deserving scholars from underprivileged backgrounds in their final year at India's top law schools. The Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholars will receive comprehensive assistance covering tuition fees, boarding, and hostel expenses.
IDIA, an organisation that identifies and trains underprivileged students with the potential to succeed at premier law schools, will provide sustained financial support, mentorship, and training to the selected students. The Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholars will also receive support for internships, moot courts, and other professional development opportunities.
Justice Riyaz Chagla, confirming the MoU, stated that the scholarship will honor his father's life and work. The endowment aims to promote inclusivity and opportunities within the legal education sector for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Iqbal Chagla-IDIA Scholarship Endowment will invest in future generations of lawyers committed to justice and equity.
