China Unveils New Climate Targets: Peak Emissions by 2035, Boost Renewables

Chinese President Xi Jinping has revealed new climate targets as part of the country's updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The announcement comes ahead of the COP30 summit in Brazil and under pressure for major economies to enhance their climate ambition.

Xi described the new goals as 'China's best efforts' under the Paris Agreement, stressing the need for a supportive international environment. The targets include a commitment to cut economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by seven to 10 per cent from peak levels by 2035, with 2020 as the official baseline year.

The magnitude of the promised reductions has sparked mixed reactions from observers, with some considering the targets modest and not fully reflecting China's emissions reduction potential. However, the new targets mark a significant shift for China, as it sets an absolute emissions target for the first time, moving away from intensity-based goals.

In addition to the emissions reduction target, China aims to have its total installed capacity of wind and solar power generation reach 3.6 billion kilowatts by 2035. By this year, non-fossil energy consumption will account for more than 30 per cent of China's total energy consumption.

Existing global pledges, including China's updated NDCs, leave the world on track to warm by around 2.5°C to 2.9°C, far above the Paris Agreement goals. Xi's announcement adds a long-term milestone to China's climate roadmap, but the international community awaits further ambitious commitments to meet the agreed-upon climate targets.
