Seahorses are prized trophies and the initiation to secure diving. Regrettably, not every family can cover the expenses associated with such a training program.

In the city of Herne and its neighboring district, Wanne-Eickel, a well-regarded initiative called the Goldfish Project is gaining traction among local schools. This program offers young students an opportunity to learn important swimming skills, starting with the prestigious Goldfish Badge—an initial step towards safer aquatic activities.

Unfortunately, not all families can afford the costs associated with such valuable swimming courses. To bridge this gap, the Mondritterschaft Wanne-Eickel e.V., a non-profit organization, has stepped in to help. Since its inception in 2016, it has been inviting schools within the district to join the Deutsche Landesrunde für Rettungs- und Sozialschwimmerei (DLRG), a nationwide lifeguarding and social swimming association. By covering the cost of the courses, the Mondritterschaft allows children to participate 50 percent cheaper or completely free until they complete the exam.

Beyond primary schools, even special needs institutions and an integrative kindergarten have been involved in the Goldfish Project. To further finance the initiative, the Mondritterschaft actively solicits bottle cap donations from across the country. Local supporters returning from vacations often contribute their collected caps as well.

Recently, a new collaborator has joined the initiative: the Turkish restaurant "La Mekan" on Hauptstraße 368, 44649 Herne. The owners and staff have pledged their support for the Goldfish Project, enabling children attending schools in Herne and Wanne-Eickel to benefit from the program.

Fa. Prison, a recycling company, is another ardent supporter of this environmental-friendly action. Those who wish to contribute can donate their collected bottle caps at "Fritzchen das Gleiscafé" on the premises of the Heimatmuseum, Unser-Fritz-Straße 108, 44653 Herne. Other regional partners are always welcome to join the Goldfish Project and make a positive impact on the community's youth.

The Goldfish Project serves multiple purposes. It offers children an interactive learning experience, fosters a sense of environmental responsibility, and promotes community engagement. Through the dedication of organizations like Mondritterschaft Wanne-Eickel e.V., and local partners like "La Mekan" and Fa. Prison, primary school students in Herne and Wanne-Eickel are given the chance to learn crucial swimming skills while making meaningful connections with their community.

Education and self-development are at the core of the Goldfish Project, as it provides children with an opportunity to learn swimming skills through a collaborative effort among local schools and organizations like Mondritterschaft Wanne-Eickel e.V. This learning initiative, which fosters community engagement, also promotes environmental responsibility by encouraging bottle cap donations.
