Experienced with Windows for over three decades, I recently transitioned to a MacBook. Here's my take on the change.

Changed Operating System: After decades of using Windows, I made the leap to a MacBook, and here's my experience.

In the ever-evolving world of technology, the need for an efficient and versatile laptop is paramount. One individual, having made the switch from Windows to a MacBook Air in 2020, found themselves grappling with the unique quirks of the macOS system and the limitations of their device.

The MacBook Air, with its sleek form factor, is a convenient companion for those on the go. However, the initial 13-inch model could not run three external monitors, leading the individual to rely heavily on their Windows PC for 80% of their work.

The individual soon upgraded to a 15-inch MacBook Air, but found that the device's performance was still comparable to that of Windows laptops at a higher price point. They also encountered challenges with the macOS system, such as learning different hotkeys and navigation methods compared to Windows.

To work around the monitor problem, the individual now uses a DisplayLink dock. They also found that while installing and managing apps on macOS is less complicated compared to Windows, upgrading the storage and memory of Apple M1 MacBooks presents some challenges.

M1 MacBooks do not support user-upgradeable RAM after purchase, and the RAM is soldered onto the logic board. The individual was unable to upgrade the storage and memory on their MacBook Air. If they were to upgrade the MacBook Air to 32GB of RAM and 2TB SSD, it would cost an additional $1,200, essentially doubling the price of the laptop.

However, there are alternatives. For storage, users can opt for external SSDs, which can be nearly as fast as internal storage, especially if used with a Thunderbolt enclosure. Cloud storage solutions like iCloud are also available for additional storage needs.

When purchasing a new MacBook, it's advisable to consider one with sufficient storage and RAM at the time of purchase. If the individual were to upgrade their current MacBook Air, they could sell or trade it in for $540, but they would still need to pay at least $1,200 for a new 15-inch MacBook Air M4.

Despite these challenges, the MacBook Air delivers extended battery life, allowing the individual to work between three to four hours without charging. The individual also found that macOS's Spotlight Search is faster and more accurate than Windows Search.

In conclusion, while upgrading the storage and memory of M1 MacBooks presents some challenges, users can work around these limitations through external solutions or by considering purchasing a new MacBook with more storage and RAM if needed. As with any technology purchase, careful consideration and research are key to making the best decision for your needs and budget.
