Austria's Q1 2025 Car Sales: Mixed Picture, EVs Surge, Tesla Slips

New car registrations in Austria from January to March 2025 show a mixed picture. While overall registrations rose by 4.4 percent to 66,017, the commercial vehicle market and tractor registrations saw decreases of up to 20 percent and 10 percent respectively. Notably, two out of three newly registered cars were bought by companies.

Looking at the types of cars, registrations of gasoline hybrid vehicles increased by 26.8 percent, and those of diesel hybrid passenger cars rose by 6.8 percent. However, sales of diesel passenger cars plummeted by 33 percent. The share of private car owners was highest for gasoline-powered cars at 40.2 percent, followed by new diesel cars at 21.1 percent, and new electric cars at 27.6 percent.

In the electric vehicle segment, registrations of pure electric cars increased by 31.2 percent. Tesla maintained its lead with 1,304 cars sold, a 48 percent decrease from the previous year's quarter. The second most popular electric car was the BYD Seal, with 758 registrations, closely following Tesla Model Y's 813 registrations in March 2025. The most popular passenger car brands overall were VW, Skoda, and BMW.

The first quarter of 2025 saw a significant shift in car registrations, with a notable increase in alternative drive vehicles, now accounting for 54.7 percent of new registrations, up by 26.1 percent from 2024. Despite the growth in electric vehicle registrations, Tesla's sales decreased, and the commercial vehicle market saw a significant drop. As companies continue to drive the market, private car owners' preferences are shifting towards electric and hybrid vehicles.
