Australian Governor-General praises progress in relation ships with Vietnam

In a significant development, Politburo member and Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Committee, Nguyen Troung Nghia, met with Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn and the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory, Andrew Barr, in Canberra on September 19.

During the meetings, Nghia praised the progress made in trade, tourism, and education cooperation between the two countries. He suggested both sides effectively carry out the existing high-level agreements and cooperation mechanisms, boost security and defence cooperation, strengthen economic connectivity, and expand two-way trade.

Mostyn expressed her delight over her first trip to Vietnam as the Australian Governor-General earlier this month, describing the visit as a vivid demonstration of the deep partnership and affection between Vietnam and Australia.

Leaders from the Australian National University also attended the meetings, where they praised the Communist Party of Vietnam's education and training development and expressed readiness to support Vietnam's push for science, technology, innovation, basic sciences, and human resources through scholarship provision for Vietnamese students.

Barr, who highlighted Canberra's strengths in health care, services, science and technology, and education, expressed enthusiasm for developing cooperation projects with Hà Nội and other localities of Vietnam in education, training, trade, tourism, and urban planning during a planned visit to Vietnam in early 2026.

Nghia thanked the Australian Government and people for their support during Vietnam's renewal and development journey, reiterating Vietnam's importance in developing its relations and all-round cooperation with Australia.

Working sessions were held with the First Assistant Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and leaders of the Australian National University. Australia pledged continued support for Vietnam's efforts to become a developed nation.

The meetings come after a Vietnamese delegation led by Nguyễn Trọng Nghĩa strengthened relations particularly through bilateral visits in September 2023. The delegation emphasized cooperation in areas such as multilateral diplomacy, international integration, trade, investment, and contributions to United Nations initiatives.

The community of Vietnamese in Australia has made significant contributions to Australia's development and to bilateral relations. The meetings underscored the commitment of both countries to further strengthen their relations and cooperation in various sectors.
