Australia Boosts International Education Integrity, Targets Asia for Growth
The Australian government is pushing for integrity in the international education sector, a move welcomed by quality providers. This comes as officials from key departments develop future policies targeting countries like India, Vietnam, and Indonesia to diversify the study landscape. The focus is on balancing growth with quality and integrity, while addressing challenges like housing affordability and immigration.
The 'Policy update: the next steps for Australia' session at The PIE Live Asia Pacific conference shed light on the future of the sector. The government aims to 'sensibly manage' the onshore student market, prioritizing quality and integrity over rapid growth. This approach is not unique to Australia, as other major study destinations face similar issues. Standalone English language providers and private/vocational providers are seeking a 'fair share' in policy changes.
To tackle these challenges, the government is promoting the diversification of international students to regional areas and closer partner countries. The link between international education and national skills needs will also become more formal, with future frameworks explicitly channeling students into relevant courses. State governments are focusing on the on-the-ground student experience, ensuring safe, welcoming communities and quality accommodation and support services.
Assistant Minister Julian Hill, seen as a 'champion of education' with direct industry experience, is providing relief and continuity to the sector. The government's focus on integrity, diversification, and alignment with national skills needs is set to shape the future of Australia's international education sector.
