Adecco Partners with IOC's Athlete Career Programme for Life Skills Development at Nanjing Youth Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Adecco, the world's leading HR solutions provider, have joined forces to offer life skills development workshops at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in China. This partnership, under the Athlete365 Career+ initiative, aims to support young athletes in their career development beyond sports.

The workshops, part of the IOC's 'Learn & Share' zone in the Youth Olympic Village, will focus on topics such as time management, building a supportive network, and career planning. The ACP workshop 'Act on your time' is designed to support athletes with good time management practices, while 'Balance your act' will teach them how to capitalise on the supportive network around them.

Adecco's expertise in workforce solutions will help athletes acquire skills relevant to employability, career planning, and professional development. This includes guidance and resources to build competencies such as communication, teamwork, and career management, which are critical for success both within and beyond sport.

The collaboration is part of the broader Athlete365 Career+ framework, a flagship IOC program designed to support athletes at various levels and stages of their sports careers. The focus at events like the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games is to reach young athletes early and empower them with tools for long-term success off the field.

In addition to the workshops, the IOC is providing life skills development resources through online apps and facilitated discussions. The IOC's Culture & Education Programme (CEP), in cooperation with the IOC ACP and Adecco, is offering these resources to 15 to 18-year-old athletes participating in the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

The partnership is not new for Adecco, as they have been working with the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee since 2005 and 2007 respectively, supporting elite, Olympic, and Paralympic athletes in their transition from sport to the labour market.

The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, held from August 16th to 28th, is seeing the participation of over 3,800 young athletes from 204 nations and regions in 28 sports. Patrick Glennon, Senior Vice President for the IOC Athlete Career Programme, stated that the company wants to share its expertise in talent development and career guidance with young elite athletes at the Youth Olympic Games.

The partnership is also supported by a team of 37 Athlete Role Models (ARMs), including many legendary Olympic and World champions, who play a key role in supporting, mentoring, and offering advice to young athletes. The IOC's vision is to contribute to building a better world through sport. As part of this vision, they oversee a wide range of programs and projects aimed at educating youth through sport, promoting Olympism in society, and leading and supporting the Olympic Movement.

  1. The collaboration between Adecco and the IOC's Athlete Career Programme at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games is aimed at nurturing personal growth and education-and-self-development for athletes, focusing on topics like time management, networking, and career planning, alongside learning essential skills for employability and professional development.
  2. By offering workshops, online resources, and the guidance of Athlete Role Models, this partnership aims to help athletes develop their talent beyond sports, ultimately enabling their long-term success and contributing to the IOC's vision of using sport to build a better world.
