Assiniboia Residential School Commemorated for Historic Significance
A former residential school in Winnipeg, the Assiniboia Residential School, has been commemorated for its historic significance. Federal officials and members of a survivors and families group unveiled plaques at the site on Tuesday. The school, operational from 1958 to 1973, faced issues such as overcrowding, fire safety, sanitation, and ventilation. Despite these concerns, it is now recognized as part of the National Program of Historical Commemorations by Parks Canada, joining over 2,200 other sites across Canada. The commemorative plaques were unveiled by Winnipeg South Centre MP Ben Carr. He stated that the plaques serve to remember the school's troubled past and honour residential school survivors nationwide. This event follows a 2022 initiative by the Assiniboia Residential School Legacy Group, which installed a monument and interpretive panels at the site. The Assiniboia Residential School's commemoration is a step towards acknowledging and understanding Canada's residential school history. The plaques serve as a reminder of the past and a tribute to survivors, ensuring their stories are not forgotten.
