ASEAN Boosts Creative Economy Efforts for Global Leadership by 2045

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is boosting its creative economy efforts, with a focus on practical local initiatives. This market of nearly 700 million people is the world's third largest, and the UK is actively involved in shaping its creative economy strategies.

ASEAN's approach emphasizes creative communities and local culture as the foundation. It uses a 'pentahelix' or 'hexahelix' model, involving various stakeholders like community, government, business, academia, media, and intermediaries. Indonesia's 'Creative Cities Network' is a notable example of this.

The region is developing a 'sustainability framework' to become a global leader in the creative economy by 2045. This framework uses a 'multi-stakeholder' approach, engaging every government ministry. The aim is to promote social inclusivity, protect the planet, and draw from past skills and culture.

John Newbigin, the Mayor of London's Ambassador for the Creative Industries and Chair of Creative PEC's Global Creative Economy Council, has played an active role in shaping creative economy thinking in the ASEAN region.

ASEAN's creative economy policies are evolving, as seen in the South-East Asia region and South Korea. With a practical, inclusive approach, the region is poised to become a global leader in the creative economy by 2045.
