ApplyBoard Survey: UK Tops, Australia Slips as Students Seek Affordable, Diverse Destinations
A recent survey by ApplyBoard reveals shifting trends in international student recruitment. While Australia's appeal as a study destination has slightly decreased, it remains higher than in Fall 2024. The UK retains its position as the top choice, with Canada and the US expected to gain popularity.
The Fall 2025 Recruitment Partner Pulse Survey found that 74% of respondents report students exploring more diverse study destinations. This includes growing interest in New Zealand, France, and Finland. Recruitment professionals note a rise in demand for shorter programs, certifications, or blended-learning options. Affordability, including tuition fees, living costs, and post-study work opportunities, remains the primary concern for students.
Perceptions of the US as an open and welcoming destination have declined since Spring 2025, while Canada has seen improvement. The UK is perceived as the most open, safe, and welcoming destination, contributing to its status as the leading international student destination.
The survey, conducted in August-September 2025, gathered insights from nearly 400 professionals across 40 countries. As students consider a wider range of destinations, including Washington DC, institutions must adapt their recruitment strategies to meet evolving preferences and affordability concerns.
