An Epic Journey in A Wrinkle in Time

Fifty years after Madeleine L'Engle's novel 'A Wrinkle in Time' was published, Disney executives considered adapting it for the big screen. The concept was a promising one, with its exploration of light versus darkness symbolising more than just the battle between good and evil; it also represented complacency versus activism, bravery versus cowardice, individuality versus conformity, and other profoundly relevant ideas in society today.

The film, directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Jennifer Lee and Jeff Stockwell, follows Meg Murry, a middle school student struggling with self-worth, as she embarks on a journey led by three celestial guides to find her father and confront a powerful evil force. Meg Murry, the protagonist, is an imperfect girl who takes a fantastic journey to learn to embrace her flaws.

Ava DuVernay was approached to direct the film, and she visualized the story coming to life on screen after reading the script. DuVernay was chosen because she had the skills, creativity, and passion to bring the story to life, as well as the ability to tell both an intimate story and one with substantial issues and themes. DuVernay found excitement in directing 'A Wrinkle in Time,' as she represents many firsts, similar to Madeleine L'Engle.

Jennifer Lee, who wrote the screenplay, was thrilled at the prospect of adapting L'Engle's novel for the big screen. Lee had to make choices to adapt the book's ethereal and spiritual nature for film while staying true to the emotional journey of the story. The goal of the filmmakers was to extend the edge of imagination and adventure found in the book through design and effects to bring Jennifer Lee's script to life.

The film is produced by Jim Whitaker, who has produced films for Disney including 'Pete's Dragon' and 'The Finest Hours.' Catherine Hand, who met Madeleine L'Engle more than 30 years ago, joined Whitaker as a producer for the film. Charlotte Jones Voiklis, Madeleine L'Engle's granddaughter, believes Ava DuVernay understands the importance of fighting evil and staying true to L'Engle's intentions.

'A Wrinkle in Time' is a story about belonging, as it shows Meg Murry finding her strength and learning that the center of the universe starts inside her. The film's message is that extraordinary actions can often seem rather ordinary, and through Meg Murry’s voyage, we can come to a place where lightness can overcome darkness, allowing us to bring the best parts of ourselves to the world.

Storm Reid, the actor playing Meg Murry, sends a message to audiences to always love themselves and do what they love. Director Ava DuVernay aims to capture the emotional story of a young girl's journey while staying true to the details that have meant so much to readers for decades. 'A Wrinkle in Time' is a timeless tale that adds rich layers to the powerful story, lovingly preserving L'Engle's voice while bringing a new vision to life.
