DRF Awarded Contract to Operate Ten Additional Air Rescue Bases in Baden-Württemberg

In a significant development for emergency medical services in Baden-Württemberg, the DRF Stiftung Luftrettung gemeinnützige GmbH (DRF) has been selected to operate ten additional air rescue bases, starting from 2025. This decision follows a European-wide tender process, during which DRF's offer was found to be the most competitive based on quality and price criteria.

The newly awarded concession, with a term of 15 years, includes the operation of the "Christoph Ortenau" site, securing the operation of a new, additional air rescue site. The retention of this site is a result of the expert recommendations from the structural and needs analysis of air rescue in Baden-Württemberg from 2020.

The Ministry of the Interior has also awarded the contract for the operation of the air rescue site at Mannheim Airport to DRF. This marks the first extension of an existing site, with the rescue helicopter bearing the radio call sign "Christoph Mannheim". The helicopter, an Airbus H145 D3 with a five-blade rotor, will be deployed daily from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

DRF, which has been operating the Mannheim air rescue site since its establishment in 1986, will continue to provide the helicopter crew. The medical crew, however, will be ensured by the University Hospital Mannheim and the University Hospital Heidelberg.

A new station will be built on the CityAirports Mannheim grounds. Once all recommendations of the air rescue study have been implemented, the existing ten air rescue sites will be able to reach every location in Baden-Württemberg within 20 minutes during the day.

The Interior Ministry has not specified a timeline for the completion of these tendering procedures for the remaining eight air rescue sites. The Press Release of November 17, 2022, does not provide any information on the parties involved in the tendering procedures for the remaining sites. Decisions on the other sites will be made one by one in the tendering procedures.

The current status of the tendering procedures for the remaining sites remains undisclosed. The Interior Ministry is preparing further tendering procedures for air rescue sites in Baden-Württemberg.
