Africa Legaltech Hackathon Celebrates Success in Accra

The Africa Legaltech Hackathon, a groundbreaking event dedicated to advancing legal technology innovation across Africa, recently concluded in Accra, Ghana. Organized by LegalTech Lounge and Because She Can, the event took place at the Google office in Accra, attracting participants from various countries eager to innovate in the legal space.

The 2025 edition of the Africa Legaltech Hackathon marked Africa's first legaltech hackathon, bringing together legal professionals, tech innovators, and changemakers to develop tech solutions addressing legal challenges across the continent. The purpose of the event was to foster collaboration in legal tech, explore emerging technologies such as AI in law, and accelerate digital transformation within African legal systems.

From an initial pool of 50 applications, 8 teams across 10 Universities were selected to compete. The competition was fierce, with teams showcasing innovative ideas and solutions.

Notable winning projects from the 2025 hackathon include Team Advis, who won top honors with an AI-powered legal assistant built to support self-represented individuals navigating Ghana's legal system. Their platform offers step-by-step guidance, simplified legal flashcards, document review, lawyer referrals, and ongoing support. The win comes with an internship opportunity from leading corporate law firm Vint & Alethia Attorneys & Consultants.

Team Legalis, the first runner-up, introduced an AI-driven legal research and document management platform for African legal systems. Their platform automates case analysis, summarizes legal documents, and streamlines access to precedents.

Team Lawgorithm, awarded second runner-up, introduced AI Legal Assist, an AI-powered platform for affordable legal assistance.

Kweyakie Blebo, co-founder of Because She Can, emphasized the importance of inclusion and bold thinking in the legaltech ecosystem. "The Africa Legaltech Hackathon is the beginning of a movement towards an incubation pipeline and acceleration support for African legaltech solutions," she said.

The Africa Legal Hackathon is shaping the next chapter with an incubation pipeline, acceleration support, and a roadmap to scale solutions across the continent. Several teams are now in early-stage conversations with institutions and potential investors.

Team PrimeOps won Most Promising Solution for their AI-powered Online Dispute Resolution platform. The success of the Africa Legal Hackathon demonstrates the potential of African talent to deliver world-class innovation in the legaltech field.

Marcia Achiaa Antwi from Team LegalX was awarded Best Female Participant. Vint & Alethia Attorneys & Consultants presented two special recognitions at the Africa Legaltech Hackathon.

The Africa Legaltech Hackathon 2025 concluded on April 11 at the Google Office in Accra. Both Team Advis and Team Legalis will showcase their innovations at this year's Accra Lawtech Hangout.

Michel Nkansah, Founder of Legaltech Lounge, expressed optimism about the future of African legaltech solutions. "The Africa Legaltech Hackathon is just the beginning," he said. "We look forward to seeing the impact these innovations will have on legal services across Africa."
