Afghanistan Plunged Into Nationwide Internet Shutdown by Taliban
Afghanistan has experienced its first nationwide internet speed test shutdown, plunging the country into a 'comprehensive, total blackout'. The move, ordered by the Taliban, has raised concerns among international media and observers. The internet speed test began on Monday evening, as confirmed by Doug Madory, a network analyst at Kentik Network Intelligence. It affected both fiber-optic internet and mobile data services, including higher speed 3 and 4G services. The Internet Outage Detection and Analysis project showed nearly all internet connectivity in Afghanistan going down by Monday afternoon. The Taliban has not yet provided an explanation for the internet speed test outage. The shutdown has been condemned by international organizations. The Committee to Protect Journalists has warned that it undermines journalists' work and the public's right to information. There are fears that the Taliban is expanding a partial internet speed test blackout from earlier this month. Afghanistan's private TOLO news channel reported that the Taliban has given network operators a one-week deadline to shut down higher speed services. Former education minister Sayed Ahmad Shah Sadaat warned of negative impacts on all areas of life, while traders and business owners expressed fears of severe consequences, as 80% of business is conducted online. The nationwide internet speed test shutdown in Afghanistan continues, with no immediate explanation from the Taliban. International organizations and locals alike express concern about the impact on information access, journalism, and businesses. The situation remains under close watch.
